The Patriots waived tight end Matt Lengel and rookie defensive end Caleb Kidder. Lengel appeared in six games last season but has been injured and hasn't played this preseason.

Lengel's release leaves James O'Shaughnessy and Jacob Hollister competing for the No. 3 spot at tight end behind Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen.

Kidder, 23, a rookie free agent from Montana, was signed by the Patriots on July 27 after being released by the Minnesota Vikings.

Lengel, 26, out of Eastern Kentucky, had two receptions for 22 yards, including a touchdown catch from Tom Brady, last season.
