Dashon Goldson, former free safety for the 49ers who's been bypassed so far on the free agent market, is reportedly in Foxboro for a visit with the Patriots on Sunday.The Globe's Shalise Manza Young and Greg Bedard both mentioned the visit. Bedard offered an insightful reason for Goldson being here and a remedy for the sometimes haphazard play the Patriots are getting from Brandon Meriweather. With Meriweather entering the final year of his contract, it may make sense for the Patriots to deal him now. He's made two Pro Bowl appearances but is not a Pro Bowl caliber player. He will no doubt attempt to max out in the coming offseason based on his resume and the Patriots - who have at times relegated him to non-starting roles - will not be paying max money to keep him. Now may be the time to get something in return for his imminent departure. On Saturday, Meriweather had a disturbing showing in 1-on-1 tackling drills, failing to even make contact with Julian Edelman and Stevan Ridley on consecutive reps. Compared to fellow safeties Patrick Chung, James Sanders and Brandon McGowan, Meriweather has appeared slow. Admittedly, there are hundreds of reps taken during these camp practices and I haven't keyed on Meriweather exclusively for a high percentage of them. But his shortcomings have stood out. Goldson is 6-1, 205. He was a fourth-round pick of the Niners in 2007 and became a starter in 2009 when he had 94 tackles and four picks.
