Brady: Challenging moments ‘put life in perspective'

HOUSTON — After all the Deflategate questions, the Roger Goodell questions and Donald Trump questions, the sports world finally learned Tuesday what has actually been on Tom Brady’s mind this season when Tom E. Curran revealed that Brady’s mother has been ill for some time.

Wednesday marked Brady’s first public appearance since news of his family’s situation broke. Though he understandably didn’t want to discuss the issue at length, he acknowledged the tendency for difficult moments to put lesser adversity in perspective.

“It always does, it absolutely does,” he said. “A lot of things put things in perspective. Families and kids, injuries, they all put life in perspective.”

Brady had been asked multiple times since the Patriots’ AFC Championship win over the Steelers whether he had extra motivation this season given the league’s treatment of him in the Deflategate saga, which ultimately led to him being suspended the first four games of the season. He repeatedly said that his teammates were his motivation.

Yet this week's news answered questions about his motivation a little more clearly. Per Curran’s story, Galynn Brady has been sick for 18 months with an illness that “has been a major source of concern for the family.” Brady got emotional at Monday night’s Opening Night media session, tearing up when explaining that his father is his hero.

On Wednesday, a more composed Brady touched on the situation, but noted that his family isn’t the only one going through what his has.

“There’s a lot of families that are affected by certain things like that, and you just wish for the best for everybody,” he said. “Same with my family.”
