Revs leave points on the field

FOXBORO -- Jay Heaps acknowledged that his team did not bring its best game on Saturday night. But the New England Revolution will take the one point in their scoreless draw with the Columbus Crew at Gillette Stadium.

It marks the Revs' second straight MLS shutout, an achievement that New England's defense is thrilled to build upon.

"The key is that we fought hard, and we didn't give anything away," said Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis after the tie. "There's going to be games like that."

Another shutout is huge for the confidence of their defense, but everyone inside the Revolution locker room will walk away from Saturday night's scoreless draw while feeling like there were a few goals left out on the field that could have led to three points, instead of just one.

"It's just another one of those games where it's another step for us," said Heaps. "It was a good shutout for us. We defended well at times. We got loose a little bit in the game, but overall, we had some good chances and I thought their goalkeeper literally kept them in this game all night.

"We wanted to win this game," Heaps later added. "Unfortunately, we hit the cross-bar, we missed a couple chances inside the six."

The biggest and perhaps their best chance came just 30 seconds into the match, as Benny Feilhaber had a wide-open look from the left post, inside the box. But his shot missed the net, wide right.

Everyone seemed to agree that that should have been the difference-maker.

"If that goes in, it's a different game," said Heaps.

"I don't think they touched the ball before I had that chance," said Feilhaber. "I think that was in 30 seconds or less. If I put that in the back of the net, it's a different game completely. I wish I could have had it back, but we had some other chances in the first half to kind of take the 1-0 lead."

Still, the Revs will take the point, and will try to carry their strong defensive performance into their next game, next Saturday night in Toronto.
