Share

The New England Patriots' blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday did little to inspire confidence in the team's future at the position. Cam Newton continues to struggle, and Jarrett Stidham hasn't fared a whole lot better in his limited reps.If their season continues to spiral, could the Patriots look to add a QB via the 2021 NFL Draft? If so, they should have plenty of options.Let's take a look at the top five QB prospects for next year's draft, as well as a few honorable mentions.

The Patriots likely won't tank enough this year to "Tank For Trevor," as Lawrence is pretty much the unanimous No. 1 overall pick. Still, it's fun to dream.

Lawrence can do it all. His arm, accuracy, and athleticism are elite and separate him from the pack as a generational talent at the quarterback position. The Clemson star should be make an immediate impact in the NFL if he lands in a good situation.

When everyone is finished gushing over Trevor Lawrence, the focus will be on Fields. Like Lawrence, Fields was one of the nation's top recruits and quickly dominated upon transferring from Georgia to Ohio State. He's a threat to run as well, which is becoming more and more important in the NFL with each passing year.

Earlier this month, Lance announced his decision to forgo North Dakota's spring season and enter the 2021 NFL Draft. He's expected to be a first-round selection, and it's easy to see why. In his first season as a starter at North Dakota State last year, Lance didn't throw an interception in 287 pass attempts. That's an NCAA record.

Lawrence, Fields, and Lance is the consensus top three QBs on draft boards, but then it gets a bit dicey.

Trask has been outstanding so far in 2020. While he isn't the dual-threat like the aforementioned players on this list, Trask is one of the most accurate pocket passers you'll find in next year's draft. His strong arm is the icing on the cake.

If Trask can continue this hot streak, he should have no problem being an early selection in 2021.

Wilson has been sensational so far this year. After BYU's blowout win over Texas State, Wilson now has thrown 157 straight passes without a pick. While he may be a lesser-known name compared to the guys above him on this list -- and the players in the honorable mentions list below -- Wilson is surging up draft boards and will be a name to remember come next year's draft.

Honorable Mentions

Mac Jones, Alabama

Jamie Newman, Georgia

Kellen Mond, Texas A&M

Brock Purdy, Iowa State

Sam Ehlinger, Texas
