Report: Seahawks to release Sherman

What has been rumored for days has apparently happened in Seattle, where perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman has been told by the Seahawks that he'll be released Friday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Sherman hasn't ruled out a return to the Seahawks at a reduced price, he told Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer. He made $11.4 million last season.

The Patriots inquired about obtaining Sherman last offseason and would likely be interested in him again. He'll be 30 on March 30 and is coming off a torn Achilles that required surgery and had a cleanup procedure on his other Achilles.

Still, he should be one of the most sought-after free agents. NFL free agency officially begins Wednesday.  Top free agent corners: (i.e. Sherman, Malcolm Butler, Trumaine Johnson) are projected to command upwards of $10 million a year.
