Houston Astros bench coach Alex Cora will interview for the Red Sox managerial opening Sunday in New York with Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

NBC Sports Boston Red Sox Insider Evan Drellich has confirmed the interview. The news was first reported by Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy.

The Astros play the Yankees in Game 3 of the A.L. Championship Series on Monday and Sunday is a travel day for the teams.

Cora, 41, a former Red Sox infielder who was general manager of Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, has been a rumored candidate for the job since John Farrell was fired on Monday. He played 14 seasons in the major leagues, including 2005-08 under manager Terry Francona in Boston. The Tigers, Mets and Phillies are reportedly interested in Cora for their managerial openings.

Former Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus, ex-Sox outfielder and minor league manager Gabe Kapler are among the other rumored candidates.
