Bum shoulder lands Rafael Devers on disabled list

Rafael Devers was said to be "banged up" Wednesday night, which is why he was out of the lineup against the Texas Rangers.

It appears to be slightly more serious than that.

Devers, suffering from what the Red Sox are describing as left shoulder inflammation, was placed on the 10-day disabled list today, retroactive to Wednesday. Tzu-Wei Lin, who's played in 16 games over two stints with the Red Sox earlier this year, was called up as a replacement.

With Dustin Pedroia also out, the Sox are likely to rotation Eduardo Nunez, Brock Holt and, to a lesser stint, Lin between second and third base in Devers' absence. The All-Star break may also be a break for Devers and the Sox; he'll be eligible to be reactivated on Saturday, July 21, which means he may miss only five games (the four-game series against the Blue Jays that starts tonight, and the opener of a weekend series in Detroit on Friday night after the break).

Devers played in 89 of the Red Sox' first 94 games with a slash line of .241/.292/.424. He's hit 14 homers and driven in 48 runs, but also has made major-league-leading 19 errors at third. (And that's for all players at every position, not just third base.) Even though it's not his throwing shoulder, the discomfort probably led to many of the erratic throws that resulted in errors. If the rest eases the discomfort and cuts down on the errors, the five games missed will be a small price to pay.
