Chris Sale makes history with 17-strikeout performance vs. Rockies

Chris Sale set a career high with 17 strikeouts vs. the Rockies, and he also made MLB history in the process.

The Red Sox ace became the first pitcher in league history to strike out 17 or more in seven or fewer innings pitched. He's also the first pitcher since Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer to strike out 17+, the first left-hander with 17+ K since Johan Santana in 2007, and the first Sox pitcher to accomplish the feat since Pedro Martinez in 2000.

Despite the historic outing, Sale ended up with a no-decision as the Rockies immediately took the lead when he was replaced by Brandon Workman in the eighth inning.

It's worth noting that Roger Clemens had 17 strikeouts through seven innings pitched during his 20-K performance in 1996, so Sale is the first to strike out 17 and be lifted after seven frames.
