Report: Red Sox showing interest in Tigers RHP Mike Fiers

Righthander Mike Fiers threw a gem in the Detroit Tigers' 5-0 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, and when asked by reporters about his lively fastball after the game, he didn't miss the opportunity to jab his long-time friend and former college teammate J.D. Martinez, who had the day off.

“Maybe I was just mad that J.D. wasn’t in there,” he told the Detroit Free Press. “He ducked me today. … I think he told [Red Sox manager Alex] Cora to get a day off against me.”

But could the two be reunited before the July 31 trade deadline? ESPN's Buster Olney reported last night that the Red Sox are one of many teams inquiring about the 33-year-old starter, who won his first World Series ring last season with the Houston Astros.

Fiers turned in a fine start in Saturday's win over the Red Sox, striking out six batters with seven hits and no runs allowed on 99 pitches in 6-1/3 innings. In 19 starts this season for Detroit, Fiers is 7-6 with a 3.49 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.
