Sox don't plan on any surprise manager interviews

BOSTON -- The Red Sox have interviewed three managerial candidates to date -- Pete Mackanin, Dale Sveum, Sandy Alomar Jr. -- and have two more interviews to conduct later this week with Torey Lovullo and Gene Lamont.

It appears as though one of those will be the next manager of the Red Sox, as general manager Ben Cherington said there are no current plans to bring in any other candidates.

"I wouldn't rule out adding another person to the list of candidates," said Cherington, "but there are no plans to right now. Someone could emerge, but right now, we don't have any plans to.

"Our hope, as we get into next week, and get to the GM meetings is to narrow that list down, with the goal of having someone in place before Thanksgiving."

Cherington said it was "possible" he would interview someone for a second time while in Milwaukee for the GM meetings, but none is currently set up.

At some point, Cherington will narrow the list of candidates, at which time ownership will become more involved. To date, CEO and team president Larry Lucchino is the only executive above Cherington to meet with the first group of candidates.

"In the end, when we start to narrow the list down, it will be more collaborative," said Cherington.
