Bullpen, Addison Reed center stage for Red Sox as trade deadline nears

BOSTON — The Red Sox are indeed in the mix for the Mets’ Addison Reed, but a baseball source with knowledge of the situation reinforced Sunday that “lots” of teams are still in pursuit of the reliever at this point.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal on Sunday reported Reed to be "a focus" for the Sox.

After a fielding error and a poor performance from Matt Barnes opened the door to four runs for the Royals in the eighth inning Sunday at Fenway Park, the clamor for the Sox to get a reliever will be louder. But the potential for an upgrade has been clear for a while now, with a sense the Sox need one more stable piece for the late innings.

“I know that there’s a lot of conversations still going on and I’m sure that’s the case in 29 other teams,” Sox manager John Farrell said before Sunday afternoon’s game. “Maybe some of the asking prices now as time ticks away, does that change? I know every effort is being made to add where we can and to improve the team. Whether that means a guy in the bullpen or elsewhere, that’s all being discussed.”

Righties Carson Smith and Joe Kelly are both on the mend, with the latter closer to a return than the former. But Brandon Workman’s emergence probably isn’t reason for the Sox to pass on making an addition before the non-waiver trade deadline passes Monday.

Reed, 28, is a free agent after the season and has a 2.57 ERA in 49 innings. The righty has 48 strikeouts compared to just six walks.
