Mike Mayock wants Raiders to follow Patriots' ‘mind-boggling' model of success

As long as Bill Belichick continues to dominate his competition, his competition will try to emulate him.

Take Raiders general manager Mike Mayock, who was brought in this offseason to turn around a moribund Oakland squad that went 4-12 last season.

On the latest episode of NBC Sports Bay Area's "Raiders Insider" Podcast, host Scott Bair asked Mayock how he plans to turn things around in Oakland.

Mayock responded by bringing up the New England Patriots unprompted.

"The goal is to win every football game," Mayock told Bair. "Obviously you look at what New England's done ... I played for Coach (Bill) Belichick and have always had the utmost amount of respect (for him).

"I think when you do it the way they have over his 18 years, it's almost mind boggling. That's the model out there, and nobody else has been able to do it for that level of time. So, I have a lot of respect for them."

Mayock, a former defensive back, is an early Belichick disciple, having played the 1982 and 1983 seasons on Belichick's New York Giants teams.

Belichick's philosophy apparently rubbed off on the Raiders general manager, who added a line right out of his former coach's lexicon.

"All we're trying to do is one block at a time," Mayock told Bair. "Get a tiny bit better every day and don't even worry about all that other stuff."

If you've seen HBO's "Hard Knocks," you know Mayock is already dealing some headaches in Oakland, most involving star wide receiver Antonio Brown. And in a competitive AFC West, it seems unlikely the Raiders will be battling the Patriots for conference supremacy this season.

But if Oakland takes a step forward under Mayock, he can thank Belichick for the inspiration.

UPDATE (12:35 p.m. ET): It appears Mayock has had enough of one headache. The Raiders are planning to suspend Brown after Mayock had a dispute with the star wideout, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
