Report: Illini's Leron Black could have felony charge reduced in deal

There is an update in the legal situation involving Illinois sophomore forward Leron Black.

Black, who is facing felony aggravated assault charges after allegedly pulling a knife on a nightclub bouncer in February, could see that charge bumped down to a misdemeanor and avoid jail time in a deal between prosecutors and Black's attorney, the Associated Press reported Monday.

According to the report, the deal would allow Black to plead guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge after paying a $200 fine and performing 25 hours of community service within 90 days. He would then face a year of unsupervised probation. The felony charge carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years.

Black is one of three Illinois basketball players currently involved in legal situations. Not a month after Black's arrest and indefinite suspension, junior guard Jaylon Tate was arrested and charged with domestic battery and indefinitely suspended. A week later, junior guard Kendrick Nunn, in a separate incident, was also arrested, charged with domestic battery and indefinitely suspended.

Head basketball coach John Groce and athletics director Josh Whitman had no comments on the specific situations of any of the three players during a joint press conference last week.

Black's hearing is set for April 21.
