Life's pretty darn good in East Lansing right now.

A day after the Michigan State football team was tabbed as one of four teams to play for a national championship in the College Football Playoff, the Michigan State basketball team was the new No. 1 team in the country when the latest AP poll was released Monday morning.

Following losses last week by both No. 1 Kentucky and No. 2 Maryland, it was expected that undefeated Michigan State would rise from No. 3 to the top of the rankings, and that's just what happened.

The Spartans picked up a big win over Louisville in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge last Wednesday before holding Binghamton to just 33 points in a blowout win Saturday. Michigan State takes its 9-0 record into games this week against Maryland-Eastern Shore and Florida.

Elsewhere in the top 25, Maryland dropped from No. 2 to No. 6 after suffering its first loss of the season at the hands of North Carolina last week. The 7-1 Terps play UConn on Tuesday night.

Purdue stayed at No. 11. The Boilermakers also boast an undefeated record at 8-0. They play IUPUI, Howard and Youngstown State this week.
