Spartans lose grad transfer Ben Carter to injury for ‘extended period of time'

Michigan State will be without graduate transfer Ben Carter for a while.

Carter, who transferred in from UNLV this offseason and was set to play for the Spartans right away, suffered a knee injury after landing awkwardly when contesting a shot. He will require surgery and be out for an extended period of time, the team announced Monday, giving no timetable for his return.

Carter's 2015-16 with the Runnin' rebels season ended abruptly in January when he tore his ACL, making this yet another knee injury for the forward.

"I feel awful for Ben," Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said in Monday's announcement. "He had worked extremely hard on his rehab, and to suffer another knee injury on a fluke play is incredibly cruel."

Carter was set to perhaps make a pretty big contribution in the Spartans' frontcourt. He averaged 8.6 points and six rebounds a game last season. Michigan State lost forwards Matt Costello, Colby Wollenman, Deyonta Davis, Javon Bess and Marvin Clark this offseason.
