Report: Big3, ‘Big Brother' producers to put on quarantined basketball tournament

Live sports are back! Kinda.

Friday afternoon, Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports reported that the Big3 is partnering with Endemol — the production company behind “Big Brother” — to put on a quarantined, reality-show-style, 16-player basketball tournament to fill the entertainment void vacated by live sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Per Haynes, the show could debut in the first week of May under the name: “Big Brother: Big3.”

Last week, reports surfaced (via Haynes) that the Big3 was planning a quarantined three-on-three basketball tournament for some time in April. “Big Brother: Big3” appears to be the fruit of those discussions.

The looming question: How will it work? According to the report, the showcase will be three weeks long and held at an undisclosed Los Angeles property, where players and referees will be quarantined after first testing negative for the novel coronavirus.

In addition to the games being broadcast, the daily lives of participants in the tournament will reportedly be documented on camera, as well.

Haynes also reported that a cash prize as large as “seven figures” could be in store for the winner. According to Haynes, rules and regulations are still being finalized, and no participants have yet volunteered or been selected.

As of this writing, no adjustments have been made to the Big3’s season schedule, which kicks off on June 20. Haynes reported that Big3 founders Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz are currently planning for this to be an annual, preseason event.

While none of this is official yet, it certainly seems something worth getting excited about for sports fans. If this can be executed safely, it would certainly spice up the sports-less hellscape we currently find ourselves entrapped in.
