Status of Bears at TE unclear with Martellus Bennett absence

Coach John Fox is sorting through his roster, getting players on a playing field this week for the first time via a voluntary minicamp permitted for incoming head coaches. He has enough to assess with the players who are in camp but has the added matter of at least one who isn’t.

Tight end Martellus Bennett remained away from Halas Hall for all three days of the minicamp, reportedly in search of a contract revision after a Pro Bowl season with a career-high 90 receptions.

“I know where he is,” Fox said on Thursday. “With anyone who’s not here I’d prefer they’d be here but he’s part of our football team and we’ll leave it at that.”

Fox said that he expects Bennett to still be on the Bears’ roster by the time this draft weekend ends. But as for the longer term, “that’s kind of a tough question to answer on anybody,” Fox said. “I don’t know yet; we’re just evaluating practice and this is our first start and our first opportunities over this week.”
