Cubs promoting top catching prospect Willson Contreras

When Albert Almora Jr. was promoted last week, the next question became: When will Willson Contreras get the call?

We didn't have to wait long for that answer.

The Cubs are calling the game's top catching prospect up to the big leagues and the 24-year-old should be ready to roll for Friday's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field.

Contreras enjoyed a breakout 2015 campaign in Double-A, winning the Southern League batting title (.333 AVG) and posting an .891 OPS in 126 games.

That put him on the map as one of baseball's top prospects and he's continued on that path this season.

The Cubs bumped Contreras up to Triple-A to start 2016 and he has absolutely annihilated opposing pitchers at the minor leagues' highest level to the tune of a .350 average, .439 on-base percentage and 1.030 OPS. He already has more homers (9) than he hit all of last season (8) in 72 fewer games.

Contreras has been especially hot of late, hitting .383 with a 1.215 OPS and 24 RBI in his last 20 games. In that span, he's also collected 16 extra-base hits (8 doubles, 2 triples, 6 homers).
