Major League Baseball announced the 30 nominees for this season's Roberto Clemente Award on Monday, with first baseman Anthony Rizzo the Cubs' nominee and relief pitcher David Robertson the White Sox nominee.

The award is handed out annually to the player who best represents the game through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement, according to MLB. Every team nominates one player.

Last season, former White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko won the award, sharing honors with Jimmy Rollins. He was the first member of the White Sox to win the award, which dates back to 1971 and was named after Clemente in 1973.

Twice have Cubs won the award: Rick Sutcliffe in 1987 and Sammy Sosa in 1998.

Rizzo was an All Star earlier this season and is in the conversation for the National League MVP award. He's batting .278 with a .388 on-base percentage, 29 home runs and 88 RBIs.

Robertson is in his first year with the White Sox, signed as a free agent last offseason. He has 29 saves, ranking ninth in the American League.

Robertson will be honored as the White Sox nominee on Wednesday, Roberto Clemente Day, at U.S. Cellular Field, while Rizzo will be honored later this month at Wrigley Field.

Fans can vote for the Roberto Clemente Award winner online, and the winner will be announced during the World Series.
