Road Ahead: Cubs looking to add for second half run

CSN's JJ Stankevitz and Patrick Mooney recap the Cubs' first half of the season and look ahead to what they could add at the trade deadline in the latest Cubs Road Ahead, presented by Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Honda Dealers.

The Cubs sit at 47-40 heading into the All-Star break, good enough to earn the final NL wild card spot if the season ended today. While they may have exceeded first half expectations, the Cubs believe they can get to another level and make a strong push for the postseason, a place they haven't been since 2008.

And looking for some outside help certainly isn't out of the question.

Unlike years past, the Cubs can afford to add a piece or two at the trade deadline without mortgaging the future.

Whether it's bullpen help, a back end of the rotation pitcher, or simply another bat, the Cubs are expected to be buyers — for the first time in a long time — this year.

"I definitely think they need another starting pitcher," Mooney said. "... That'll be their primary focus. They don't have that much financial flexibility left, so sure they'd like a complementary outfielder, maybe even another bullpen piece.

"I really think they need to come away with a starter before July 31 cause they know there's a lot of attrition in that area, it's a weakness in the upper levels of the farm system, and they're just going to need it before the end of the season."
