Fire sign goalkeeper Matt Lampson

The Major League Soccer roster compliance date is less than a week away and the Chicago Fire still have to finalize the roster so moves should come in regularly for the next few days.

The first of those moves became official on Friday with the signing of goalkeeper Matt Lampson.

Lampson, 26, had been in on trial with the Fire since the start of preseason training. He will likely battle Patrick McLain, who signed with the Fire in the offseason, for the No. 2 goalkeeper spot behind incumbent starter Sean Johnson.

Lampson played for the Columbus Crew as a Homegrown Player beginning in 2012 after a collegiate career at Ohio State. Lampson made 16 appearances, including 13 in 2013, with the Crew. He was with the Crew through last season although he did go out on loan to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Charlotte Independence in the USL.

The contract is for one year with a club option for a second year.

Goalkeepers Callum Irving and Matt Bersano have also been trialing with the Fire. With three goalkeepers under contract it seems unlikely there will be a spot for either, but both are still in camp.

Midfielders John Goossens and Arturo Alvarez are still trialing with the Fire as well. Both have performed well enough in the preseason to make an impression, but no official information has come out regarding their status.

The Fire currently have 22 players under contract.
