The White Sox signed Dan Johnson to a minor-league deal and invited him to spring training. The former Rays pinch-hit hero will likely spend most of 2012 with Charlotte, only warranting a call-up if Paul Konerko gets hurt or Adam Dunn is really bad.
Chuck Garfien spoke to Cliff Politte and Neal Cotts about life after baseball, and as it turns out, the pair of relievers both had hip surgeries after their careers ended. Politte's stuff about the end of his career is tough, because things went downhill so quickly for him -- from a 2.00 ERA in 2005 to an 8.70 mark in 2006 before he was eventually released.
Gordon Beckham also told Garfien he feels like he's finally fixed his issues from the past two years, specifically detailing some tweaks to his swing that he believes will help him in 2012.
If Robin Ventura is serious about having no problems benching a struggling player, it'll be a significant departure from the last few years of the Ozzie Guillen era, in which struggling hitters were given a leash so long that it'd only be yanked when they were on the precipice of qualifying for the worst offensive season in major-league history.
