White Sox morning roundup

From yesterday:

The Yoenis Cespedes saga is finally over, as the 26-year-old signed a four-year, 36 million deal with Oakland. The White Sox never were serious about signing him, especially for that money and without a real place to put him.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are expected to sign 19-year-old Cuban Jorge Soler for a deal reportedly worth around 27 million. The White Sox were probably in on Soler, too, perhaps more so than Cespedes. But while Soler would've instantly become the team's best prospect, the Sox probably weren't in the market to commit 27 million to a 19-year-old who hasn't seen a pitch in the United States yet. Don't get me wrong, it's great for the Cubs to land Soler, but the Sox don't have as much wiggle room.

Oh, and speaking of the Cubs, they won't be playing in U.S. Cellular Field any time soon, no matter what some rumors may say.

In something that actually pertains directly to the White Sox, Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein ranked Addison Reed No. 81 on his top 101 prospects list. The White Sox are the only team in the AL Central not represented in Goldstein's top 20, while Kansas City, Minnesota and Detroit all have multiple prospects on the list.

Jon Garland agreed to a minor-league deal with Cleveland, pending a physical, which seems about right for a guy coming off rotator cuff surgery. If Garland does pitch for the Indians this year, it won't be right out of the gate. But it's good to see Garland land somewhere -- he's only 32, and when healthy, teams could do worse than using him as a durable back-end starter.
