White Sox place Zach Putnam on DL, activate Daniel Webb

The White Sox placed right-hander Zach Putnam on the 15-day disabled list Saturday and reinstated right-hander Daniel Webb from his own stint on the DL.

A strained right groin is the reason for Putnam’s trip to the disabled list, which is retroactive to Aug. 27. The 28-year-old Putnam has been nagged by this groin issue for about a week and went seven days between appearances earlier this month.

“You’re very close to that September line but any time you’re short out there you could run the risk of everybody else getting overtaxed,” manager Robin Ventura said. “It’s just best for him to get this cleared up to where we know when he comes back pitching, it’s not something where you’re crossing your fingers if you know he’s healthy.”

Putnam has a 3.07 ERA in 41 innings this year and has 55 strikeouts, giving him an average of 12.07 strikeouts per nine innings, the ninth-highest rate among qualified relievers this season. Since joining the White Sox last season, Putnam has a 2.45 ERA in 90 games.

Webb was placed on the disabled list Aug. 5 with a mid right back strain and made three appearances on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte. In 17 games with the White Sox this season, Webb has a 2.49 ERA and a 15/12 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 21 2/3 innings.
