White Sox starting pitchers have started to live up to the team’s preseason expectations for performance.

Over the past 13 games, White Sox pitchers are 5-2 with a 3.01 ERA. They have 81 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings and have produced nine quality starts, including five in a row. After struggling early, the team ranks sixth in the American League with 20 quality starts this season.

“They’ve been doing great,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “They’ve given us a chance to win games. Offensively the last couple of nights haven’t been that great, but pitching-wise they’re giving us the opportunity. We just have to take more advantage of our opportunities, and even last night you go down to the last at-bat with a chance to win it. You’ll take that.”

Less than two weeks ago, White Sox starting pitchers had a 5.16 ERA and were among the bottom five staffs in the majors. While it has only moved up one spot to 25th, the White Sox rotation has trimmed half a run off its ERA, which now stands at 4.56. The team’s starters also rank 13th with 2.7 Wins Above Replacement, according to fangraphs.com.

“It seems like it has been pretty good recently, another good job yesterday,” catcher Tyler Flowers said. “We put ourselves in a couple of tougher innings but were able to execute and get ourselves out of them. We’ve done a good job in that regard, just haven’t come up with the big hits the last couple of games when we’ve had the opportunities.”

The White Sox are 8-5 overall during the stretch.
