GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Jonathan Toews scored after missing the last 22 games, but Martin Hanzal scored the winner midway through overtime as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in Game 1 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series on Thursday night.

Brent Seabrook scored with just 14.2 seconds remaining to send it to overtime. But Hanzal redirected a shot 9:29 into overtime to give the Coyotes the victory.

Toews scored on his second shift, a backhander that got through Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith about four minutes into the game. But the Blackhawks wouldn't get another one past him.

Mike Smith stopped 43 of 45 shots for the victory. Corey Crawford stopped 31 of 34 in the loss.

Taylor Pyatt got the Coyotes on the board after a sloppy series by the Blackhawks kept them in their zone for far too long. Vermette scored off a pass from Raffi Torres with 2:33 remaining in the second period.

It was another night that the Blackhawks could've been helped by their power play. And while they had good opportunities on Thursday, they went 0 for 4 on the night.
