Cub Pitchers Have Mixed Results For Mesa

The Cubs had a quartet of pitchers going Thursday afternoon in Mesas 7-4 victory over the Peoria Javelinas and each provided mix results.

Kyle Smit earned the victory, his third of the season, but only after he had blown a save opportunity that cost fellow Chicago prospect Jake Muyco a chance at a victory. Smit allowed a run on three hits in an inning with the run coming on a Cord Pehlps homer with two outs in the seventh inning.

David Cales pitched a scoreless eighth and has not allowed a run in his last 5 13 innings. Muyco, meanwhile, allowed three runs on six hits over four innings before turning things over to Chris Carpenter, who didnt allow a run in 1 23 innings.

Infielder Ryan Flaherty went hitless in four at-bats.
Peoria Saguaros White Sox
Eduardo Escobar continued to show on Thursday afternoon why he was a deserving choice for the AFL Rising Stars Game. Escobar had another big effort at the top of the batting order, leading the Sags to a 14-5 victory over visiting Phoenix.

Escobar had three hits, including a double and a triple, and scored twice. He has 10 hits in his last 16 at-bats, pushing his average to .377.Jared Mitchell was not as fortunate. He was hitless in five at-bats as his average dropped to .179.

Anthony Carter allowed a run on three hits in an inning of work.
