Cubs' offense sets National League record, but it's not one to celebrate

The Cubs' offense set a record in Monday afternoon's 1-0 loss against the Reds. However, it's one that they probably would have liked to avoid.

After striking out 11 times Monday, the Cubs now have 58 strikeouts through five games, a National League record. The 2009 Washington Nationals previously held the record through five games with 57.

Willson Contreras (eight), Ian Happ (10) and Anthony Rizzo (six) have combined for 24 strikeouts in 67 plate appearances. Contreras struck out with two runners on and one out in the second inning Monday. Later, Rizzo struck out with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning.

For comparison's sake, the Cubs have 24 walks in five games, including eight in Saturday's 17 inning marathon against the Marlins (they also struck out 20 times in that game). In a way, their walk and strikeout totals are skewed, as they have played about six games innings-wise thus far.

Not only are the Cubs striking out a lot, but their offense has been up-and-down entirely. By getting shutout in back-to-back games, the scoreless streak now stands at 18 innings. They last scored in the 10th inning of Saturday's win over the Marlins.
