Experts weigh in on the Cubs' draft

ESPN.com's Keith Law spends his time keeping an eye on top prospects and amateur players in the college world and evaluated each MLB team's draft.

He liked the Cubs' pick of Albert Almora and believed Pierce Johnson, the right-hander the Cubs selected in the supplemental round, would have gone in the first round if it wasn't for a forearm injury.

However, Law believes Johnson's arm issues may not be behind him, even if he has potential to be a No. 2 starter.

Law also liked the Paul Blackburn (supplemental round) and Duane Underwood (second) picks. He feels Josh Conway, the Cubs' fourth-round selection, was a Top 50 player before he blew out his elbow last month.

Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com was also complimentary of the Cubs' draft, writing:

"Several scouts from other teams gave kudos to the Cubs' haul in the first Draft of the Theo Epstein era. After nabbing Albert Almora in the first round, Chicago went pitching-heavy, taking seven arms in a row after the toolsy outfielder. Four were of the high school variety, with Paul Blackburn and Duane Underwood offering upside one scout in particular liked."

Of course, this doesn't mean the Cubs' 2012 draft will still look good five years from now and the organization now has to come to terms with the picks on a deal, but Theo Epstein and Co. are at least grading well immediately following their first "Super Bowl" as Jason McLeod called it.
