For the second time this week, the Chicago Fire have made a move in hopes of strengthening the squad for the second half of the season.

Chicago acquired midfielder Alvaro Fernandez from the Seattle Sounders FC today, in exchange for allocation money, according to a report on the team's official website.

"Alvaro is an experienced player that has proven himself as an offensive weapon in MLS," Fire Head Coach Frank Klopas told the site. "He is a versatile player and can occupy a number of positions in the midfield."

Fernandez becomes the second newcomer this week to occupy a Designated Player slot. The club had already signed striker Sherjill MacDonald on Tuesday.

The exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Fernandez is expected to join the team prior to their match against the San Jose Earthquakes tomorrow night.

The Uruguayan midfielder has played in the MLS since July 2010 and appeared in 80 matches, scoring 16 goals and adding 10 assists.
