Notre Dame clears C.J. Prosise, hopeful on Durham Smythe

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame redshirt junior running back C.J. Prosise and redshirt freshman tight end Nic Weishar were both cleared to practice Tuesday, coach Brian Kelly said.

Both players suffered concussions that kept them out of Notre Dame’s 28-7 win over Wake Forest. Getting back Prosise, Notre Dame’s leading rusher with 975 yards on 148 carries with 11 touchdowns, is important for the Irish going against the nation’s No. 1 rush defense in Boston College this weekend at Fenway Park.

Sophomore defensive tackle Daniel Cage, who also missed last week’s game with a concussion, has not been cleared yet, Kelly said.

Kelly also said redshirt sophomore tight end Durham Smythe, who suffered a torn MCL and a shoulder injury against Virginia in Week 2, has made such good progress in his recovery that he could potentially return for Notre Dame’s bowl or playoff game. Redshirt junior defensive tackle Jarron Jones, who suffered a torn MCL in August, was mentioned last week as a candidate to return for a postseason game, too.

Junior running back Tarean Folston is “making great progress,” from his torn ACL against Texas, Kelly said, and has given the sixth-year Irish coach no indication he won’t return to Notre Dame in 2016. Folston is matching sophomore safety Drue Tranquill, who Kelly described as a rehab “freak,” in their respective recovery processes.
