Hinsdale South senior wing Zion Griffin completed his meteoric summer rise on Tuesday night as he committed to Iowa State.
The 6-foot-5 Griffin went from a mid-major target to a regional high-major recruit as he was down to a final four that also included Illinois State, Kansas and Pittsburgh.
Griffin ultimately pledged to Iowa State as he's become a legitimate prospect to watch after improving his skill level and perimeter jumper. A great athlete who was comfortable scoring from the mid-range and in last season, Griffin should be one of the major candidates for Player of the Year this season.
As a junior, Griffin was one of the most productive players in the area as he averaged 17.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while shooting 58 percent from the field.
The Cyclones have a history of recruiting Chicago-area players as former Niles North product Abdel Nader finished his career at Iowa State. Assistant coach Daniyal Robinson is also a noted Chicago recruiter who used to work at Loyola.
