Blackhawks: John McDonough named Top 25 NHL Power Broker by Sportsnet

Blackhawks President & CEO John McDonough has played a crucial role in helping the Blackhawks capture three Stanley Cups in the last six seasons, and, in doing so, has impacted the NHL in a large way as well.

The revitalization of hockey in Chicago has boosted the popularity in both the city and sport, and it continues to grow.

Sportsnet's John Shannon put together a list of the Top 25 NHL Power Brokers, and McDonough came in at No. 10.

Here's what Shannon had to say about McDonough's impact on the Blackhawks and the league:

When John McDonough took over the Blackhawks, he knew exactly what to do to reignite the fire in hockey’s most malnourished market. The same magic that made the Cubs lovable could make the hawks lovable. Local TV, annual conventions and embracing history were key to the team’s resurgence. Sure winning helps, but it was McDonough who put Stan Bowman and Joel Quenneville in place. And he has created a marketing and business plan that has put a blackhawk t-shirt or sweater on thousands of fans.

Re-engaging fans in Chicago has made the team the most important U.S.-based franchise in the NHL. McDonough’s fingerprints are all over that plan. Some suggest Rocky Wirtz should be here too; just remember Wirtz’s single greatest act as owner was to hire McDonough.

Pat Brisson, who's the agent for Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, also ranked No. 22 on the list.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman leads the list at No. 1. The Top 5 is rounded out by Bruins Owner Jeremy Jacobs, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, NHLPA Special Assistant to the Executive Director Mathieu Schneider and NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr.
