Wednesday's Cubs lineup vs. Richard, Padres

Share

The Cubs take the field Wednesday afternoon (evening in Illinois) having lost seven straight games since the trading deadline.

They look to buck that current trend against former White Sox prospect Clayton Richard at Petco Park.

Here's the way the Cubs will lineup against the Padres lefty:

1. David DeJesus - CF
2. Darwin Barney - 2B
3. Anthony Rizzo - 1B
4. Alfonso Soriano - LF
5. Starlin Castro - SS
6. Welington Castillo - C
7. Josh Vitters - 3B
8. Joe Mather - RF
9. Jeff Samardzija - P

Notes:

--Soriano returns to the lineup after sitting out Tuesday with a hand injury suffered when he got spiked sliding into second base in Game 1.

--Brett Jackson gets a day off. He's been scuffling of late, striking out in eight of his last nine plate appearances.

--Vitters is making his second career start. He picked up his first MLB hit Tuesday night, a two-run double.

--Samardzija is now the lone holdover in the Cubs rotation from Opening Day. Ryan Dempster and Paul Maholm have been traded while Matt Garza is on the DL with an elbow injury. Chris Volstad, currently slotted in the rotation, began the season as one of the five starters, but was sent down to Triple-A Iowa after a rough start before being recalled.

--Rizzo turns 23 today.

--Also on this day in 1988, Wrigley Field turned their lights on for the first time in a game.
