TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan is entering the NFL draft.

The university confirmed the decision Thursday.

Jernigan was the anchor of the line and commanded double-teams, allowing linebackers to run free and make plays. He was a second-team All-America selection and had 63 tackles, including a team-high 11 for loss, and 4 1/2 sacks. The 6-foot-2, 296-pounder has tremendous strength and is considered one of the top interior linemen in the country.

Jernigan said in a statement: "It's rare to get an opportunity like I have and I'd like to take advantage of that opportunity right now."

The Seminoles beat Auburn 34-31 on Monday night for the third national championship in school history. The defense loses senior starters in All-America defensive back Lamarcus Joyner, Christian Jones, Telvin Smith and Terrence Brooks.

ESPN first reported the decision.
