TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Former Arizona State football coach Bob Owens has died. He was 77.

The university said he died from complications from cancer on Monday.

Owens was named the Sun Devils' interim coach after Frank Kush was fired in 1979. He coached Arizona State the final seven games of that season before going on to become an assistant coach at UNLV.

Owens returned to his alma mater, Pasadena Community College, in 1991, serving as an assistant coach for 10 seasons before becoming an instructor in the Kinesiology, Health and Athletics Division.

He was a member of the U.S. National Triathlon team's 70s-and-older division and retired from PCC after 21 years in 2011.
