- LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lee Westwood is part of a three-way tie for the lead going into the second round of the PGA Championship, with Rory McIlroy one shot back. Tiger Woods is simply trying to make the cut.

- AKRON, Ohio - It will be a homecoming fit for a King. After four years in Miami, NBA star LeBron James is welcomed back by his hometown with an elaborate event expected to draw more than 25,000 fans. James re-signed last month with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

- IRVINE, Calif. - Michael Phelps gets a second chance to qualify for the Pan Pacific Championships when he swims the 100-meter butterfly against rival Ryan Lochte at the U.S. nationals. Phelps needs a win to guarantee a spot on the U.S. team and a trip Down Under this month. Finals start 9 p.m.

- MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Vikings officially move into their two-year temporary home, hosting the Oakland Raiders in the preseason opener. Vikings fans get their first look at rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, and the Raiders give newcomer Matt Schaub his first live snaps. Game starts 8 p.m.

- DETROIT - It will be one of the most anticipated preseason games of 2014 in the NFL - Cleveland quarterback Johnny Manziel is ready to make his debut Saturday when the Browns take on the Detroit Lions.

- PRETORIA, South Africa - The judge in the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius says she will give a verdict Sept. 11, ending a televised trial that stretched for five months and transfixed South Africans and others around the world.

- WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. - With only five races remaining before NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup championship begins, time is of the essence for Marcos Ambrose. He needs a victory to make the 16-driver field, and the road course at Watkins Glen, where he has excelled, offers his best chance when the series visits Sunday.

- ATLANTA - Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals try to increase their NL East lead against the reeling Atlanta Braves. Ervin Santana pitches for the Braves, who have lost eight straight. Game starts 7:35 p.m.

- AUSTIN, Texas - New Texas coach Charlie Strong laid down the law with a series of player dismissals and suspensions, then he moved into the dorm with his team for training camp. Texas players talk about life under Strong in preparing for the 2014 season.

- DURHAM, N.C. - Tyus Jones doesn't view the point guard position at Duke as a competition. More like a collaboration. The Duke freshman says he's not working against incumbent starter Quinn Cook. Instead, they're working together.
