COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Is Leach talking to Washington?
Texas Tech coach Mike Leach and his wife were on a flight from Las Vegas to Seattle on Monday, according to one of the flight's passengers. The assumption was that Leach was interviewing for the Washington coaching job, which will be vacant in a few days after Tyrone Willingham leaves. Leach's agent said the coach was not in Seattle to meet with the Huskies, but UW had contacted Leach and had planned to speak with him after the Red Raiders' regular season ended. (Seattle Times)

UFL preparing to move on Vick
While Michael Vick is busy looking sad in jail, his future is busy rolling out before him. The upstart United Football League is apparently salivating at the chance to convince Vick to come play for them before heading back to the NFL, if anybody will take his dog-stained rep. Don’t be surprised to see a UFL truck rolling up to Vick's prison door to pick him up when he gets to leave the slammer next summer. Commissioner Michael Huyghue knows he could get some backlash but is also clearly interested in the PR Vick could bring his new league.(New York Daily News)

Jaguars for sale?
It hasn't been a good year for the Jaguars and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better. The team apparently doesn’t have enough cash to make a significant difference tot he roster this off-season and Coach Jack Del Rio is signed through 2012. Owner Wayne Weaver isn't in a position to pay him not to coach right now so it's looking like the Jaguars may get put up on the block for a sale. Lack of cash in a down economy doesn't add up to a good future for the Jags right now. (ProFootballTalk)

Pettitte headed to Dodgers?
Yankees' lefty Andy Pettitte wasn't offered arbitration Monday and could be heading to Los Angeles to team up with his old pal Joe Torre. Even though Pettitte told Yankees fans that he never wanted to play for another team just last year when all the Mitchell Report action had him ensnared and the Bronx Bombers stood by him, Pettitte may bolt for the West Coast because he's apparently not happy with the $10 million offer he's reportedly got on the table from the team, which is much lower than the $16 million he received last year to win 14, strike out 158, and have an ERA of 4.54. Things are rough all over, Andy. (New York Post)

No-trade issue might keep Peavy a Padre
The supposedly inevitable trade of Jake Peavy to Atlanta is hitting a few more bumps. Rumor has it that the Braves won't include a no-trade clause for Peavy and that has him saying he isn't interested. Word is Peavy might not even say yes to Atlanta even if it did include the clause at this point. And the Cubs supposedly offered five players for Peavy in a deal that also included the Orioles, but it fell apart because of some financial woes on the Cubs' end. (SignOnSanDiego)

World Series champs changing formula
The Phillies made a surprise move on Monday when it didn't offer arbitration to the ancient-but-effective Jamie Moyer, who served also as a mentor to young ace Cole Hamels. The team also didn't offer arbitration to left fielder Pat Burrell, which wasn't as shocking since the guy made $14 million last season and would have gotten a raise next year but the Phils don't want to pay him more than $14 million. The rumor persists that the team may take that dough and try to sign Raul Ibanez or Rocco Baldelli to fill the slot or sign Ryan Madson and Jayson Werth to contract extensions. Of course, Burrell and Moyer could still be back for the Phils, but this certainly opens the doors wider for them not to be. (Philadelphia Inquirer)

Marbury takes $1 million offer off table
As the Knicks and reps for exiled guard Stephon Marbury square off about his coming buyout, Marbury has apparently taken a sweet little offer he made to his team at the start of this madness. He apparently said he would knock off $1 million from the approximately $21 million he's due to make this season. And team prez Donnie Walsh decided that he would rather take off $3 million from the overall salary, which has "forced" Marbury to take his initial offer off the table. He's apparently planning to hold out for the whole shebang from the Knicks. And the Knicks actually really need his roster spot right now since they've got a bunch of injured guards (Cuttino Mobley, Nate Robinson, Chris Duhon) and nobody to fill the void. (New York Post)

Stoudemire ready to go anywhere in 2010
New Suns coach Terry Porter better hope his new system works. It could be the difference between keeping Amar'e Stoudemire and losing him. Stoudemire doesn't sound like he's too wedded to Phoenix. In fact, it's looking like he'll surely test the market in 2010 when he becomes a free agent along with the likes of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh, among seven billion others. "You have to look at those opportunities, because this is a business and you want to explore every option," he said. Stoudemire said. So get those Stoudemire jerseys now. They could be collectors' items soon enough. (East Valley Tribune)

Bobcats and Wolves talking trade
Charlotte has apparently finally given up on its pursuit of the Clippers' Chris Kaman (and the Clips are apparently not interested in trading Kaman because they don't know how long Marcus Camby can stay uninjured). So the 'Cats have turned their eyes toward Minnesota. The talk there is that the Timberwolves would send Rashad McCants, Jason Collins, and a pick to Charlotte for Raymond Felton. Man, those Bobcats are desperate for a big man, no? (HoopsWorld)
