PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers and Notre Dame won't be entering into a multiyear agreement to face each other in football.

Rutgers athletic director Robert Mulcahy III said talks about a possible long-term series between the two schools stalemated over where Rutgers' home games in the series would be played.

A Rutgers official with knowledge of the talks who asked not to be identified because details of the negotiations were not made public said Notre Dame had wanted to play the games at Giants Stadium.

Rutgers, a former doormat that has gone to bowl games for three straight seasons for the first time in its history, is in the midst of an expansion that will add 14,000 seats to 43,000-seat Rutgers Stadium.

"At the end of the day, both schools could not agree about the site of the games," Mulcahy said Thursday. "We feel Rutgers' home games should be played on campus in Rutgers Stadium."

The two schools have met just four times, with Notre Dame winning all four games. The Fighting Irish won the last meeting 42-0 in South Bend in 2002, a season Rutgers finished 1-11.
