Las Vegas, NV -
Another Big Saturday in the Big 12:
Well, here we are. After a one-week slowdown in the Big 12 South, another huge game is on tap today, when Texas Tech travels to Norman to take on Oklahoma.
If the Red Raiders win, they continue their march toward a shot in the BCS title game. But if they lose, a handful of one-loss teams jump back into the national championship mix.
And this game, perhaps more than any other this season, shows how the pointspread can be a funny thing ---- how sometimes, the odds can be, well, odd.
Texas Tech (10-0 SU, 5-2-1 ATS) is ranked a solid second in the BCS standings, mere hundredths of a point behind No. 1 Alabama. Oklahoma (9-1, 7-2 ATS) is ranked fifth. Texas Tech beat Texas, in what might have been the best college game all season. Oklahoma lost to Texas, in a pretty good game, as well.
So of course, the Red Raiders should be favored today, right? Well, the game is in Norman, so perhaps Mike Leach's troops are a slight underdog, right? Think again. Texas Tech ---- unbeaten, and with a ridiculously prolific offense featuring a pair of Heisman Trophy candidates --- rolls into Sooner Nation as a 7-point underdog. Odd, indeed.
Let's take a peek at the ATS numbers, to see how this pointspread was borne out:
Oklahoma is on ATS runs of 6-2 in conference play, 7-1 after a SU win, 5-1 after an ATS win, 7-2 in November and 14-4-1 in its last 19 home games. About the only knock on the Sooners is their 1-4 ATS run at home against teams with a winning road record.
Texas Tech is on spread-covering streaks of 5-1 against winning teams, 4-1 in November and 5-2 in conference play. But the Red Raiders are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a spread-cover.
In this rivalry, the two teams have split the last four meetings SU and ATS, with Texas Tech posting a 34-27 home win last year catching 7' points. But Oklahoma is 5-2 ATS in the last seven clashes.
Regardless of how it shakes out, I know my butt will be firmly on the couch, remote in hand come kickoff. It should be another Big 12 screamer.
Friday's Money-Go-Round Report:
The college football weekday favorites went 2-1 SU and ATS Friday night, finishing off a strong week in which the chalks went 5-1 SU and ATS.
Toledo pounded Miami (Ohio) 42-14 as a 3'-point home chalk, improving to 6-2 ATS in its last eight home games and 5-1 ATS in its last six against losing teams. Miami, meanwhile, tumbled to 3-9 ATS in its last 12 Mid-American Conference contests.
Fresno State, which had been on a 9-28 ATS freefall, pulled away from San Jose State for a 24-10 road victory laying three points. The Spartans had been on a 9-2 ATS run at home.
But one underdog did manage to come through, and of course, it's only apropos that the winning pup came from the MAC, since that is the official conference of weekday college football. Buffalo upended Bowling Green 40-34 in double overtime catching five points on the road, salvaging an otherwise dismal few days for the weekday dogs.
- FYI I've released my biggest play of the season my 40 Dime Winner # 3 in a Row today. I won Part 1 when Alabama beat LSU two Saturdays ago. Part 2 was a winner last Saturday when Oregon State stopped California. Winner # 3 in a Row goes on the mid-day card. Get it now plus a bonus 2-team teaser at BrandonLangWins.com
Buffalo has now bagged the cash in eight straight road games and is on further ATS hot streaks of 9-3 in the MAC and 6-0 after a SU win. Bowling Green, meanwhile, fell to a dismal 3-14 ATS in its last 17 home games (0-4 ATS this year).
And we'll take a quick peek at the college hardwoods. Duke had been on a 7-20 ATS freefall in neutral-site games, but the Blue Devils seem to have found their form this week. Coming off Thursday's rout of Southern Illinois, Duke followed up with a 71-56 victory over Michigan giving 13' points to win and cover for the second straight night at Madison Square Garden.
UCLA, meanwhile, rebounded from its stunning upset loss to Michigan by beating Southern Illinois 77-60 laying eight points.
