Can you believe there are 10 teams that have not won a game heading into Week 3? It’s panic time for most of these teams that are watching their playoff chances slip away. Most fans overreact after dramatic losses and get emotional when discussing their team’s bleak prospects for turning the season around.
I am pretty good at dealing with these types of fans on the radio because I deal in reality and have no problem telling them the truth. This Sunday, along with Monday night, could be a deal-breaker if certain teams do not only play better but win and turn their bad luck around. Here is a look at the "Terrible 10":
San Diego Chargers
The Chargers are clearly the best “no win” team left standing heading into their Monday night home game against the New York Jets. They lost in week one to Carolina (26-24) on a last second touchdown from quarterback Jake Delhomme to Dante Rosario in front of their shell shocked home fans. Last Sunday they got the robbed out of a win when referee Ed Hochuli blew the game on what was clearly a fumble by Denver quarterback Jay Cutler as time was winding down at Invesco Field. To make matters worse, Hochuli admitted to Charger's head coach Norv Turner that he blew the call, but San Diego's defense still couldn't keep the Broncos out of the end zone on forth down and the ensuing two point conversion. LaDainian Tomlinson has a hurt toe and does not seem be the same running back that has dominated the league for the past four seasons. I think the Chargers will play with tremendous passion and a sense of urgency and beat the Jets and eventually get hot and cruise to the AFC West title.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs are the worst team in football and general manager Carl Peterson deserves all the blame for this team’s demise. Tyler Thigpen will be the starting quarterback this Sunday as the Chiefs travel to Atlanta and future hall of fame tight end Tony Gonzalez cannot be thrilled with that news. How can a quarterback from Coastal Carolina be the starting quarterback for a franchise that needs to win so badly? To make matters worse, running back Larry Johnson is not happy and he will certainly become a problem if he does not get more touches. Oakland ran the ball down the throats of the Chiefs last Sunday amassing 300 yards compared to only 55 total rushing yards for the Chiefs. This team will be lucky to win three games this season.
Miami Dolphins
Dan Marino will not be walking into the Dolphins locker room any time in the near future so quarterback Chad Pennington better get used to the boo birds in South Florida. Miami put up a fight against the Jets in their week one loss (20-14) but looked horrible against the Arizona Cardinal last Sunday losing 31-10. In that game Kurt Warner threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns and look like he could have easily thrown for 500 yards as the Cardinals had a 24-0 lead in the third quarter. The Dolphins defense had no clue on how to stop Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin as they ran deep routes behind Miami defenders. This team was 1-15 last season and should win a few games this season if running backs Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown stay healthy, run hard and help control the clock. Miami should lose their next two games at New England and at home to San Diego before they get a chance to win at Houston on October 12.
Cincinnati Bengals
This team is pathetic and Marvin Lewis should resign before he is eventually fired. The Bengals laid down last Sunday getting embarrassed at home by losing to the Tennessee Titans 24-7. In that game, quarterback Carson Palmer threw for only 215 yards and no touchdowns to go along with two interceptions. Cincinnati has only scored 17 points after two games and their passing offense is ranked dead last in the NFL at only 105.5 yards per game. Their next two road games are against the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys and I expect Chad Johnson to start popping off in the media in the next few weeks and demand a trade.
Cleveland Browns
I had NFL legend Jim Brown on my radio show this past Wednesday night and he seemed concerned. "They need to turn things around soon or changes will be made" and I agree with him. Cleveland was hammered by Dallas in week one 28-10 and that was no surprise. Then they lost to division rival Pittsburgh 10-6 last Sunday but played solid defense. Losing two home games right out of the gate is tough to swallow but if the Browns can win their next two games on the road at Baltimore and Cincinnati before their week five bye, they could still make a run at the playoffs.
