Ronaldo hat trick puts Portugal into World Cup; France qualify as well

The final four European places in the 2014 World Cup were determined Tuesday, with Portugal, France, Croatia and Greece advancing on a wild day. Right after Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice in three minutes, Ronaldo scored his second and third goals of the game to send Portugal through to Brazil. France overcame a 0-2 first leg deficit to Ukraine to win 3-2 on aggregate. Here's how things went down throughout the day:

4:53 p.m. ET. France 3, Ukraine 0. FINAL. France score the last three in this aggregate series, and Les Blues are in their 14th overall and 5th straight World Cup.

4:40 p.m. ET. Sweden 2, Portugal 3 (2-4 aggregate). FINAL. Cristiano Ronaldo scores all four goals in the series for Portugal, and they are headed to Brazil. Sweden fail to advance. Highlights:

4:30 p.m. ET. France 3, Ukraine 0. GOAL FRANCE. Ukraine, playing with 10 men after Yevhen Khacheridi was sent off in the 47th minute, give up another as Oleg Gusev puts it in his own net from a tough angle.

4:21 p.m. ET. Sweden 2, Portugal 3 (2-4 aggregate). GOAL PORTUGAL. Cristiano Ronaldo again! It's a hat trick! Ronaldo has put Portugal on his back and surely lifted them to Brazil after a second goal in three minutes!

4:20 p.m. ET. Sweden 2, Portugal 2 (2-3 aggregate). GOAL PORTUGAL. Cristiano Ronaldo! He can't be stopped!

4:15 p.m. ET. Sweden 2, Portugal 1 (2-2 aggregate). GOAL SWEDEN. Zlatan Ibrahimovic again! What a rip on the free kick as Ibra keeps it low and scores for the second time in four minutes!

4:11 p.m. ET. Sweden 1, Portugal 1 (1-2 aggregate). GOAL SWEDEN. Zlatan Ibrahimovic with the header! Sweden are back in this one in the battle of stars.

4:10 p.m. ET. Austria 1, United States 0. The U.S. continues to press, but are yet to find much luck.

4:08 p.m. ET. Croatia 2, Iceland 0 (2-0 aggregate). FINAL. Croatia advance to Brazil!

3:54 p.m. ET. Sweden 0, Portugal 1 (0-2 aggregate). GOAL PORTUGAL. Ronaldo scores for the second straight leg and Portugal look on their wan to Brazil.

3:53 p.m. ET. Romania 1, Greece 1 (2-4 aggregate). FINAL. Greece qualifies for their third World Cup..

3:47 p.m. ET. Sweden 0, Portugal 1 (0-1 aggregate). Sweden and Portugal have traded great chances in the opening minutes of the half, but goalkeepers Rui Patricio and Andreas Isaksson both came up huge.

3:34 p.m. ET. France 2, Ukraine 2 (2-2 aggregate). GOAL FRANCE. Karim Benzema scores for France to level the aggregate score, but replay shows he was clearly offside. The goal will stand, and France can now taste blood at home.

3:33 p.m. ET. Sweden 0, Portugal 1 (0-1 aggregate). HALFTIME. Stalemate in Sweden. Will it be Ibra time in the second half?

3:17 p.m. ET. Croatia 2, Iceland 0 (2-0 aggregate). GOAL CROATIA. Darijo Srna scores for Croatia despite being a man down, and Iceland are in trouble.

3:15 p.m. ET. Romania 1, Greece 1 (2-4 aggregate). GOAL ROMANIA. Vassilis Torossidis puts it in his own net and give Romania some hope.

3:06 p.m. ET: Austria 0, United States 0. Twenty minutes in and the United States have enjoyed some possession thus far. Geoff Cameron's header in the 17th minute is the talking point, as it may have crossed the line but the officials said no-goal. Was it in? WATCH:

3:02 p.m. ET: Sweden 0, Portugal 0 (0-1 aggregate). Fifteen minutes in, these two teams remain scoreless after exchanging a pair of good chances each.

2:53 p.m. ET: Croatia 1, Iceland 0 (1-0 aggregate). RED CARD. Mario Mandžukić takes a red card. The goal scorer will have to hope his team can hold on with 10 men.

2:50 p.m. ET. Romania 0, Greece 1. HALFTIME. Romania need a few goals in the second half if they have any hopes of going to Brazil.

2:47 p.m. ET. Austria 0, United States 0. The two teams are underway in Vienna LIVE on NBCSN.

2:42 p.m. ET. Croatia 1, Iceland 0 (1-0 aggregate). GOAL CROATIA. Mario Mandžukić scores for the first goal in this series and Croatia are ahead at home.

2:30 p.m. ET. Algeria 1, Burkina Faso 0 (3-3 aggregate, Algeria lead on away goals). GOAL Algeria. Madjid Bougherra with the finish, and Algeria are now in the driver's seat.

2:24 p.m. ET. Romania 0, Greece 1 (1-4 on aggregate). GOAL Greece. Kostas Mitroglou scores his first of the day and third of the playoff and Greece are well on their way to Brazil at this point, it seems.

Sweden looks to overcome a 1-0 deficit to Portugal in the marquee game, while the French are on the verge of elimination following a 2-0 loss in Ukraine last week. Les Blues will hope to turn things around at home, although 84 percent of citizens polled think their team won't advance. Meanwhile, Romania must make up a 3-1 hole at home against Greece, and Iceland and Croatia are deadlocked at 0-0 on aggregate after the first leg in Iceland.
