Report: Sixers, Robert Covington ‘indeed on course' for new contract

Robert Covington has been on a tear to start the 2017-18 season.

Covington is averaging 16.1 points per game on 48.0 percent shooting from the field and 50.0 percent from three-point range — all career highs. That’s in addition to 5.8 rebounds a night.

The swingman has also kept up with his typically stellar defense. Covington ranks in the NBA’s top 10 in several defensive categories, including deflections per game (third) and contested threes per game (eighth).

It appears all of those stats will add up to even more numbers in Covington’s bank account in the near future.

Covington is eligible for a renegotiated extension next Wednesday — the three-year anniversary of him signing with the Sixers — and per The New York Times’ Marc Stein, the two sides are “indeed on course to seal that new deal as soon as it’s permissible.”

“Nov. 15 is the first day the Sixers, using their ample salary-cap space from the summer, can make official the ‘renegotiate and extend’ deal for Covington many in Philly have been anticipating,” Stein said.

So just how much of a pay raise could Covington see in this new deal?

“The widespread expectation: Roughly $15 million immediately injected into Covington’s 2017-18 renegotiated season to set up a slightly reduced figure in subsequent extension years,” Stein said.

Not a bad bump in salary for guy who was initially signed from the G League to a four-year, $4.5 million contract.
