Breaking: Sixers GM Billy King Fired

Share

The only surprising thing about Billy King's departure from the Philadelphia 76ers is that it didn't happen sooner.

The Sixers were beaten on Monday by the Atlanta Hawks, a team the Sixers have had luck against recently.  With a 5-12 record, attendance struggling mightily, and no light at the end of the tunnel, the higher ups decided it was time to part ways.

My problem with all of this: you trust the guy enough to trade away Allen Iverson, a move that will undoubtedly shape your franchise for the foreseeable future, then you fire him less than a year later.

But hey, the Sixers play the Celtics on Wednesday.  Maybe the new GM can learn how to turn around a struggling franchise by watching Boston.

UPDATE: The Daily News confirms it.  They're saying former Nets GM Ed Stefanski will take over.  News conference to announce all of this later today.  Mo Cheeks may or may not be retained as the head coach.

UPDATE 2: David Aldridge has more over at the Inquirer: Stefanski played at Penn and is a Bonner guy.

UPDATE 3: You can watch a video of the move analyzed here.
