LYNCHBURG, Va. — Ria'n Holland dropped 29 points to spark Mercer to a 78-59 victory over Drexel in a semifinal-round game of the Paradise Jam tournament at Liberty University on Saturday night.
The tournament, originally scheduled to be played in the U.S. Virgin Islands, was relocated after the islands suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. Liberty University and Paradise Jam will donate all gate receipts to the humanitarian relief efforts in the Virgin Islands.
Mercer built an 11-point halftime lead, 36-25, and the Dragons never threatened in the second half.
Holland hit 9 of 15 from the field, including 4 of 8 from beyond the arc. Stephon Jelks added 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bears (4-1).
Tramaine Isabell scored 14 points off the bench for Drexel (2-2). The Dragons shot just 37.5 percent from the field (21 of 56), including 10 of 24 from deep.
Dachon Burke scored 25 points with six 3-pointers and Robert Morris made 11 from beyond the arc in beating Drexel 74-60 on Sunday to end the Dragons' three-game win streak.
Koby Thomas scored 21 points with six rebounds for the Colonials (6-4), who led by as many as 20 in winning for the sixth time in its last seven games. Matty McConnell added 10 points, 11 assists and three steals.
Burke opened the game with a 3-pointer and dunk, Jon Williams hit a 3, and the Colonials never trailed. Robert Morris hit seven 3s in the half and led 42-27 at intermission behind 15 points from Burke and 12 from Thomas.
Drexel didn't get within 13 points in the second half, and finished shooting 42 percent from the floor and 4 of 16 from long distance after committing 18 turnovers.
Kurk Lee led Drexel (5-5) with 15 points. Tramaine Isabell scored 12 off the bench, Sammy Mojica added 11, and Austin Williams grabbed 11 rebounds.
Kurk Lee and Sammy Mojica combined for 42 points as Drexel jumped out to an early lead and then held off La Salle for a 72-70 victory on Thursday night.
Drexel (5-4) cruised to a 43-30 halftime advantage before La Salle rallied late. Isiah Deas scored eight straight unanswered points to pull the Explorers to 67-65 with 3:52 remaining in the game.
Lee had a free throw and a layup and Austin Williams added a jumper for a 72-68 lead with 1:40 left. La Salle's B.J. Johnson made two free throws for the final score. Deas missed a 3-point attempt as time expired.
Lee nailed 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and finished with 23 points with Mojica adding 19. Austin Williams added 16 points with seven rebounds for Drexel, which had lost three straight before flipping it to a three-game winning streak.
Johnson had has fifth double-double of the year with 21 points and 11 rebounds for La Salle (5-5).
