Brandon Brooks restructures contract to help Eagles, Foles

Howie Roseman has made another move to create some salary cap this season.

This time, the Eagles have restructured the contract of Pro Bowl right guard Brandon Brooks. Brooks said he’ll get $4 million now and another $4 million by Sept. 1. He’ll also receive $980,000 over the season.

According to the initial report from ESPN, the Eagles created $6.37 million with the move.

Brooks’ reworked deal allowed the Eagles to give Nick Foles a pay bump and should also allow them to pay their draft class down the line. Brooks said he restructured to make sure Foles, the Super Bowl MVP, got what he deserved (see story)

This isn’t the first time the Eagles have done this in the last few months. They also did it with the contracts of Lane Johnson and Zach Ertz. Basically, Brooks isn’t taking a pay cut or getting a raise, he’s just getting some money up front as the Eagles move some money around.

In some ways, the Eagles are pushing their problems off to future days, but they have a team that can win a Super Bowl in 2018. And Roseman is pretty good at this cap stuff.

Brooks was set to have the second-highest cap number on the team this year at over $11 million. Now the Eagles have three players with cap hits over $10 million in 2018: Fletcher Cox ($17.9M), Jason Peters ($10.6M) and Malcolm Jenkins ($10.1M).

Before the move, the Eagles had around $1.6 million in cap space, so after the move, they’ll have over $7 million, which will be more than enough to pay their draft class this summer.
