Carson Wentz takes another important step in recovery from torn ACL

Carson Wentz took yet another important step in his recovery from a torn ACL this week at the Eagles' OTAs.

Wentz has begun participating in 7-on-7 drills at practice, Doug Pederson confirmed Wednesday. It's another sign the 25-year-old signal-caller’s rehab from a left knee injury is progressing as planned.

“Part of the rehab process with him is, give him a little more, I don’t want to say freedom,” Pederson said, “but a little more practice time.”

Wentz’s work has been ramping up throughout OTAs. Two weeks ago, he was taking part only in individual drills. Last week, he got some reps in 2-on-2 drills. Now, he’s participating in 7-on-7s as the offseason program approaches its conclusion next week.

“One of the controlled environments we can obviously put him in is a 7-on-7 situation,” Pederson said, “so we’ve been able to sprinkle him in and watch him in more of an uptempo type of practice. Those situations have been good. We’ll continue to do that these next two days and next week and just keep building as we go.”

Pederson sounded pleased with Wentz’s progress but insisted the team will continue to play it safe with his recovery.

“We’re going slow,” Pederson said, comparing Wentz’s rehab to that of other injured Eagles players such as Jason Peters, Darren Sproles and Jordan Hicks.

“We’re not pushing any one of these players to get back. We’re taking them slow and we’re going to make sure they’re 100 percent.”

Asked to address an ESPN report that Wentz is “shockingly ahead of schedule” in the recovery process, Pederson could not say.

“I’m not a doctor,” Pederson said. “I can’t answer that.”
