DAVIE, Fla. — Cornerback Byron Maxwell has been released by the Miami Dolphins, who signed David Fales to reinforce depth at quarterback.
With Jay Cutler nursing cracked ribs, Fales is expected to back up Matt Moore in Thursday's game at Baltimore.
Fales was with the Dolphins in training camp and cut before the season. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2014, but has never thrown a pass in an NFL game.
Maxwell, a seven-year veteran, lost his starting job to rookie Cordrea Tankersley before Game 3 and had been inactive the past four weeks. His salary this season was $8.5 million, and his release frees up significant salary cap room.
Redskins: Banged up on short week vs. Cowboys
WASHINGTON — Washington coach Jay Gruden says there's a chance injured right guard Brandon Scherff can play Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
Scherff sprained the MCL in his left knee and hurt his lower back during the Redskins' 34-24 loss at the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. Gruden says Scherff may be able to wear a brace and start against Dallas, which would be a big help for Washington's offensive line.
Left tackle Trent Williams continues to play with an injured knee that will likely require surgery at some point, center Spencer Long has knee and quadriceps tendinitis and right tackle Morgan Moses sprained both ankles.

Gruden will not overwork his team this week with the mounting injury concerns that include linebacker Preston Smith's groin, safety Stefan McClure's hamstring and rookie cornerback Fabian Moreau's hamstring.
Gruden expects cornerback Josh Norman (rib), safety Deshazor Everett (hamstring) and backup offensive lineman Tyler Catalina (concussion) to return to practice later in the week.
Raiders: Lynch's appeal of 1-game suspension denied
ALAMEDA, Calif. — Marshawn Lynch's appeal of his one-game suspension for shoving an official was denied Tuesday and the running back will miss Oakland's game this week at Buffalo.
Appeals officer James Thrash, who was appointed jointly by the league and the NFLPA, upheld the one-game ban without pay.
Lynch will not be allowed to be with the Raiders until Oct. 30.
Lynch was suspended for coming off the sideline during a scuffle in the second quarter and then shoving a game official during Oakland's 31-30 victory over Kansas City last Thursday night. The ban will cost him more than $100,000 in salary and per game roster bonuses (see full story).
Colts: Ex-linebacker Mathis accused of intoxicated driving
CARMEL, Ind. — Former Indianapolis Colts defensive star and current assistant coach Robert Mathis has been jailed on a preliminary charge of driving while intoxicated.
Police in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel say the 36-year-old Mathis was arrested on the misdemeanor charge early Tuesday after driving the wrong way on a one-way street and not signaling a turn.
Mathis retired as a player at the end of last season following a 14-year career with the Colts, during which he was named to the Pro Bowl six times. He holds the team's record with 123 sacks. Mathis is now on the Colts coaching staff as a pass rush consultant.
Colts spokesman Avis Roper says the team is aware of the arrest but didn't have immediate comment. Jail records didn't list an attorney for Mathis.
