Former Eagles DB Jaylen Watkins signs with Chargers

A former Eagle is heading west.

Defensive back Jaylen Watkins has signed a one-year deal to join the Los Angeles Chargers.

In 2017, playing on a one-year deal, Watkins eventually gave the Eagles quality depth in the secondary, playing 168 defensive snaps during the season to go along with 165 on special teams.

During the summer, the Eagles asked Watkins to move from safety to cornerback and he offered them some versatility, a trait the Eagles value in their defensive backs.

Watkins was a restricted free agent this offseason but was not tendered by the Eagles, so he became an unrestricted free agent on March 14.

Watkins was first drafted by the Eagles in the fourth round of the 2014 draft. But he was released the next September. He then spent some time with the Bills’ practice squad before returning to Philly and becoming a valuable depth piece over the last two years.

Over the last four seasons, Watkins played in 36 games with the Eagles and started five.

With Watkins gone, the only member of the 2014 draft class still in Philly is Taylor Hart, and even he switched sides of the ball and was on the street for much of last season.
